Bought this the other week when it came out. Info is good, but the title is rather misleading -- this book focuses on chord progressions almost exclusively, with a bit on what notes in a melody go with a particular chord. It looks like further stuff will be coming in installments, but this part is already 15 bucks and I went through it in a weekend so... Eh.
The iOS app version by the way is decidedly sub-par compared to an ebook. It doesn't remember your position in the book or even that you've done their "how to read this book" tutorial. It does have plenty of A/V examples but I'm pretty sure iBooks can do this as well.
The book is based on their hooktheory.com website, which itself is based off a tool for quickly sketching out chord progressions and melody, but the tool is Flash-only and so won't work in an iPad.
An interesting take on building songs, just the technical implementation holding it back.
