Is there anyone using an Edirol UA-25 as an audio and MIDI interface for iOS?
This YouTube video (How-to setup the Edirol UA25 on iPad) shows that the audio part is possible, and the comments below it imply that the MIDI ports work too, but before I go and buy a powered USB hub and a Camera Connection Kit (rather than an iRig MIDI), I was wondering if anyone else has used this set up.
Since it's been a week you may have got your answer already but usually if the interface supports MIDI, and it's class compliant, then the MIDI component of the interface will appear in the MIDI port/channel selection menus of the apps which support it.
I'm sorry I can't say "I have it and yes it does" but I can say I have a Zoom R8 which nobody has mentioned anywhere, tested it on the iPad, and I get Audio I/O and I'm pretty sure I got the transport controls working.
The signals from the Zoom R8 are sent via MIDI over the USB using codes developed by Mackie for transport controls, so all I can say is that there's a strong likelihood that the Edirol, being class-compliant will relay MIDI also..
I recommend you have a plan B just in case, i.e. ensure the store will take returns if it doesn't do what you want, then let us know
Actually, I did a search and the answer is no - or possibly not... for some reason, there's an Edirol UA-25EX listed as Audio only - check out the range of compatible devices here
If good audio I/O and MIDI is important, I've heard good things about the Lexicon Omega when I was looking for desktop external audio but back in the day they were hellishly expensive.. now they're reasonable

I was going to report back here when I had performed a thorough test but I actually went ahead and bought the Camera Connection Kit, and acquired a powered USB hub.
My MIDI keyboard has a USB port anyway, so I have that working. I have tested the UA-25 and I was able to get audio input to the iPad from my guitar, and I assume the output is working because the audio stopped coming from the iPad's speaker when I connected the UA-25, but I do not have my monitors at the moment so wasn't able to confirm that it was really coming out of the UA-25.
I don't think the UA-25's MIDI ports are supported because, while my keyboard shows up as 2 MIDI inputs on the iPad (not sure why it's 2, the second doesn't seem to get any input), the MIDI ports on the UA-25 did not appear on the iPad.
Anyway, once I have the monitors back, I will attempt to summarise my whole setup and post back here for others to see in case anyone else is searching for this information.
Re the scratched out stuff about the Zoom R8 - it too must be powered via a USB hub but otherwise it works fine - and as I've scrubbed out, the MIDI input transport functions work. Not so sure about the faders as I can't remember testing them...
Tristan, did you get any further with your investigation? Are your Edirol's MIDI ports working with the iPad? Interesting that your KB shows 2, what model is it, and are they both MIDI OUTs?
What I have found out is:
The two physical audio inputs appear as two mono channels and a combined stereo channel on the iPad. These inputs work in every app I have tried (Audiobus, Tonestack, Garageband, Beatmaker 2).
The MIDI ports never appear in any app on the iPad, but seeing as I haven't got a power supply for my keyboard, I am happy using it over powered USB anyway.
The keyboard is an M-Audio Axiom 49. According to the manual regarding the second MIDI port:
If you have connected external MIDI gear like a drum machine or another keyboard to your Axiom’s MIDI IN port, this gear can be interfaced to the computer by selecting the second listed Axiom input port. This way, your Axiom is acting as a MIDI to USB interface.
Good to know. Not sure what I'd need that for at the moment though.
